This post was long pending. Had attended a session on self defense on women's day at office ten days ago. Learnt some interesting things, which we all will usually be aware of, but need to remember at times.
Firstly the emphasis was on being alert and watchful of the environment. Deeply engrossed in a mobile conversation while walking on the street can make one an easy target for chain snatchers or mobile flickers. Not walking alone in dark/not well lit areas and such other precautions were also emphasized.
Secondly it is very important to have a presence of mind - the expert/instructor said this can be sharpened by practice They showed some ways to move -kicks, elbow twists, punches, pushes etc and set oneself free when attacked and it was more catching the attacker off guard and trying to escape than being sheer force of strength.
Also the instructor said that in case of an attack the person attached should scream, this not only alerts people in the neighbourhood who to come to rescue, it also scares the attacker to some extent and it also would give the person who was attached more strength. He added that, that was the reason people scream in martial arts, as screaming stiffens the postures and makes the person feel stronger. That was an interesting info.
Of course there was emphasis on carrying pepper sprays and practice using them for being prepared.
With what one keeps reading in newspapers these precautions seem more than important to be known these days! hmmmmm
